GCDS (Good Citizen Dog Scheme)
The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog scheme is the largest dog training scheme in the UK. The aim is to promote responsible dog ownership and in turn enhance our relationship with our pets. The scheme incorporates four awards, each level is progressive and develops basic exercises included in daily life situations and is designed for real life safety, practicality and happiness that will reward you and your dog for many years to come.
Puppy foundation
A class specifically for puppies/juveniles during their early learning stages. It is a basic eight-week course which includes socialisation with people and other dogs, response to name, recalls, walking on lead, being calm and happy to be handled and introducing basic commands.
Bronze award
An eight-week course covering walking on lead, returning to handler, responsibility and care, basic commands, polite greetings, control at a door/gate, stay, grooming and examination of the dog. Bronze is 7 weeks of tuition with test on week 8, puppies are assessed through out the course and gain their certificate at the end of the course.
Silver Award
An ongoing course for those that have achieved Bronze level. Includes travelling safely in a vehicle, play, coming when called, being happy and calm when handled by strangers, greeting politely, stays, coming away from distractions and food manners.
Classes coming soon.
Gold Award
An ongoing course for these that have achieved Silver level. Exercises include controlled off lead walking, stopping a dog in an emergency, road walking, out of sight stays, food manners, sending to bed and relaxed isolation.
Classes coming soon.
Bronze Good Citizen Dog courses comprise seven weeks of tuition, with the test on week eight. The test is not compulsory, if you want to train and not take the test that is fine; if you don't feel you are ready you can take it at a later date.
Silver and Gold Good Citizens courses are ongoing. You will be put forward for the test once you are ready. We find this approach works better than having a set time frame as it allows people (and dogs!) to learn at their own rate and take the test when the required standard has been reached.
GCDS Classes are currently taking a break, for puppy and improvers classes please follow the link to KB Dog Training, less than 5 mins from our venue.
